Kwesi Botchway Jnr., an aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite behind the him as the party’s flagbearer, drawing parallels with how the party rallied behind former President John Agyekum Kufuor during his leadership bids in 1996 and 1998.
Speaking on GHToday with Lily Mohammed on GHOne TV on Tuesday, June 24, Botchway Jnr. urged the rank and file of the party to calm tensions and end internal bickering, stressing that precedence and party unity demand that Dr. Bawumia be given the nod without further contest.
“At the end of the day, someone will be elected to become the flagbearer of the party,” he said. “The party did it for President Kufuor in 1996 and 1998, and Dr. Bawumia should not be treated any differently.”
He emphasized that Dr. Bawumia is not only a well-marketed figure but one who embodies leadership qualities such as emotional intelligence, innovation, and deep policy knowledge. According to him, many of the current government’s notable initiatives including the Gold-for-Reserve program were championed by the Vice President.

“Today, we are debating who initiated what, whose idea it was. But the record shows that many of these achievements are Dr. Bawumia’s,” he noted.
Botchway Jnr. concluded by affirming his firm belief that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership is in the best interest of the party, and that, in the spirit of fairness and consistency, the NPP must rally behind him just as it did for Kufuor.
“Dr. Bawumia is my choice, and I believe he is the right person to lead us to victory,” he stated.
