The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will conduct a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 selected polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The decision follows extensive deliberations between the Commission and representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to resolve the impasse regarding the December 7, 2024 parliamentary election results in the constituency.
According to a statement released by the EC on Wednesday, July 2, the rerun was necessitated by the use of scanned pink sheets from 37 polling stations; originally provided by the NPP, for the collation of results. These documents were not verified by the respective presiding officers, prompting the need for further verification.
During the meeting, the NDC argued that elections should be rerun in all 37 affected polling stations due to the reliance on unverified scanned pink sheets. The NPP, however, maintained that the results from three remaining polling stations should be collated to declare a winner, citing that the NDC’s own agents had confirmed the authenticity of the scanned results.
After reviewing the matter, the EC confirmed that verification and confirmation had been secured for 18 of the 37 scanned pink sheets from the respective presiding officers. Therefore, a rerun will not take place in those polling stations.
However, for the remaining 19 polling stations, where verification could not be obtained, the EC has decided that elections will be rerun to ensure the integrity of the process.
The Commission reminded the public that the confusion arose after political party supporters besieged the collation centre during the 2024 general elections and destroyed several original pink sheets for the constituency.
The EC further assured the public that the Ghana Police Service will provide the necessary security to ensure a safe and peaceful conduct of the election on July 11.
