The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, describing the move as unlawful and politically motivated.
The Electoral Commission on Wednesday, July 2, announced that fresh polls will be held in the affected polling stations on Friday, July 11, 2025, as part of efforts to resolve the months-long impasse over the 2024 parliamentary elections in the constituency.
However, addressing a press conference on Thursday, July 3, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua expressed the party’s outrage, accusing the Commission of making a sudden and unjustified U-turn.
He emphasised that the party had, until recently, been engaging with the EC under the understanding that only results from three outstanding polling stations needed to be collated to conclude the process.
According to the NPP, the EC had previously informed Parliament and the party that it possessed all necessary materials to collate results from the remaining three polling stations and declare a winner.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the New Patriotic Party finds the Electoral Commission’s sudden U-TURN on Ablekuma North election dispute as not only shocking but also DISINGENUOUS and UNLAWFUL. The Party thus COMPLETELY REJECTS the decision of the Commission to rerun the polling station elections in the said 19 polling stations ,” Mr. Kodua said.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has justified its decision, explaining that of the 37 polling stations under dispute, results from 18 were duly verified by presiding officers and approved by party agents, leaving only the remaining 19 to be subjected to a rerun.
The Ablekuma North constituency remains without a Member of Parliament due to the unresolved dispute, with residents eagerly awaiting finality.
The Commission has also assured that adequate security will be provided to ensure a peaceful and credible election on July 11.
