TEWUG declares strike over exclusion from university councils

TEWU-GH demands recognition as majority union in public universities, declares indefinite strike over “unjust exclusion” from governing councils.

Members of the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) have declared an indefinite nationwide strike action, effective today, Thursday, July 3, 2025. This follows the expiration of a 7-day ultimatum issued to authorities on June 24, 2025.

The union is protesting what it describes as the “egregious and unjustifiable” decision by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to continue recognizing the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of TUC (TEWU-TUC) as the representative union on the governing councils of traditional public universities, despite TEWU-GH having majority membership after it broke away from TEWU-TUC three years ago.

Addressing a press conference at the KNUST campus, National Chairman of TEWU-GH, Suleman Abdul-Kahman, declared:

“We demand the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of TEWU-TUC’s appointment as workers’ representative on governing councils, given the blatant disregard for democratic principles and the rights of the majority union.

The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment and Minister of Education should, as a matter of urgency, direct the Chief Labour Officer to conduct verification of the two unions (TEWU-GH and TEWU-TUC) to determine which union represents the majority of workers as enshrined in Labour Regulations 2007, L.I 1833. This, we believe, would bring the matter to final conclusion.”

The union further called for the establishment of a clear, transparent, and democratic process for determining union representation in tertiary education institutions to ensure that the voice of the majority is respected and reflected in governance structures.

TEWU-GH emphasized its commitment to protecting the rights and interests of its members and urged other labour unions, stakeholders, and well-meaning Ghanaians to support their cause to guarantee industrial harmony in the nation’s public universities.

“In accordance with our Union’s Constitution and the provisions of the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) and the powers vested in me, TEWU-GH hereby declares an indefinite strike effective today until our demands are met,” Mr. Abdul-Kahman concluded.
