Otumfuo rallies mining sector to support revamp of Ashanti sports facilities

Asantehene pledges to lead fundraising within the mining sector to rehabilitate Baba Yara Stadium and complete Nyinahin Sports Complex.

In a strong show of collaboration between traditional leadership and government, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has pledged to lead a fundraising campaign within the mining sector to support the rehabilitation of two major sports facilities in the Ashanti Region.

Hon. Adams was accompanied by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Chief Director of the Ministry Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, and Senior Technical Adviser Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah. The team briefed Otumfuo on the urgent need to upgrade the Baba Yara Stadium ahead of upcoming CAF competitions and revive the stalled 5,000-seat Nyinahin complex, which has been left incomplete since November 2024.

The commitment came during a high-level visit by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, to the Manhyia Palace. The visit followed the Minister’s inspection of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and the long-abandoned Nyinahin Youth Resource Centre.

Though Baba Yara received a facelift in 2022, the stadium now requires re-grassing of the pitch, repair of floodlights, and improvements to the stands to meet international standards. Meanwhile, the Nyinahin project—originally envisioned as a multi-sport development hub—remains untouched and incomplete.

Commending the Minister’s initiative, Otumfuo declared, “I will personally engage leading mining companies to help mobilize the needed funds. These projects must be completed—not only for the pride of Ashanti but for the benefit of all Ghana.” He urged the Ministry to submit detailed cost estimates to accelerate the fundraising effort.

Hon. Adams expressed deep appreciation for the King’s support and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and timely execution. He announced plans to form a joint task force to ensure swift progress on both projects.

The partnership marks a significant step toward restoring key sporting landmarks and strengthening Ghana’s readiness to host international tournaments while fostering regional pride and youth development.
