Ghana’s Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, has commended Botswana’s bold move to prioritise Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), stating that such investment will secure a prosperous future for the country and its youth.

Speaking at the 2025 TVET Pitso forum in Gaborone, the Minister addressed President Duma Gideon Boko directly, praising the government’s commitment to overhauling the TVET system through strategic initiatives like the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC).

“Your giant bold step to invest in technical and vocational education will guarantee a prosperous future for Botswana and its people,” he said. “Mr President, today you may be celebrated as a Joshua of Botswana. You will be the messiah if you fully and adequately implement this initiative well and invest enormously in technical and vocational education.”

Minister Iddrisu described Botswana’s HRDC initiative as a remarkable effort to rally stakeholders around the revitalisation of TVET. He underscored the importance of such interventions, especially at a time when many countries are facing rising youth unemployment and underemployment.

“There is no sure way than to invest in hands-on skills of young people,” he stated.

He further challenged the widespread misconception that TVET is a path for those who are less academically inclined or non-conformist. “That is not true and that cannot be accurate. TVET education holds the key to addressing the employability question globally,” he noted.

According to the Minister, governments that commit to developing technical and vocational skills among their youth will be creating pathways to secure employment and sustainable development.

“When teachers lead and guide well, learners learn better,” he added.

The TVET Pitso forum, hosted at Ba Isago University, gathered leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders from across Africa to explore strategies for aligning education with modern labour market demands. Honourable Haruna Iddrisu’s address added a continental perspective, drawing on Ghana’s own extensive reforms to inspire similar progress across the region.
