The National Teaching Council (NTC) has clarified that the upcoming Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), scheduled from Friday to Sunday, will proceed as planned, despite the government’s recent directive to phase out the exams by August 30, 2025.
In a statement issued by its Public Affairs Directorate, the Council stated that the Education Minister’s recent comments do not affect this weekend’s examination.
“The Minister’s statement in this video does not in any way affect the upcoming GTLE scheduled for Friday to Sunday,” the notice read.
The NTC further explained that the new form of GTLE, which forms part of the government’s revised teacher qualification model, will begin with candidates who are just completing their academic programmes; not with those already registered for the 2025 exams.
“All 2025 registered candidates should take note and adhere to this notice,” the Council emphasised.
The clarification follows an announcement by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Tuesday, July 15, that the licensure exams would be phased out by the end of August. The directive, which was issued during the inauguration of the new NTC board, instructed the Council to conclude all remaining licensure examinations within the stated timeframe.
The phase-out aligns with a key campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama, who had criticised the licensure exam as an added burden on teacher trainees already subject to rigorous academic assessments.

While the current exam structure remains in place for existing candidates, the Ministry is transitioning to a new assessment model that prioritises supervised teaching practicums and structured mentorships over standardised testing.
The NTC has urged all registered candidates to comply with the existing protocols and take part in the upcoming examination without hesitation.
