Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening teacher quality through continuous professional development, stating that building the capacity of teachers remains a top priority.
Speaking to journalists after visiting one of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) centres at Accra High School, Mr Iddrisu stressed the importance of equipping teachers with professional skills to enhance learning outcomes.
“It’s important that we build the capacity of our teachers and more importantly their professional capacity,” he said. “That’s why continuous assessment and development is an integral part even of their collective bargaining agreement.”
The Minister noted that 37,000 candidates are taking part in the current GTLE, with 5,000 being resit candidates. He highlighted the need to support teachers through their training journey and emphasised the broader vision of the government’s teacher development strategy.
“For us, when teachers guide, learners learn,” he remarked, adding that efforts to build teacher competence are central to education reforms.

Mr Iddrisu acknowledged that exams can be psychologically challenging for many, even among the most brilliant candidates, and called for encouragement and support.
“There are persons who are never emotionally and psychologically prepared or ready for exams but they can be the most brilliant of students. So ours is to encourage them, to wish them well,” he said.
The Minister also hinted that government remains committed to integrating the licensure exam into final academic assessments in teacher training institutions as part of broader reforms, while ensuring that quality is not compromised.
