Deputy Minister-designate for Transport and Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has reiterated Ghana’s commitment to embracing electric buses as part of efforts to modernize public transportation and promote environmental sustainability.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, July 25, Madam Affo-Toffey disclosed that Ghana has already received 10 out of an initial order of 100 electric buses.
She noted that while four of the buses are currently operational, the remaining six have been affected by issues related to their charging systems.
“I was told that ten buses are currently in the Ghana, hundred were ordered, but 10 were delivered, four of them are working and the other six had problems with the charging system but he [Transport Minister] has resolved that and also made contact with the company that initially started. So they are making it better where it will be able to accommodate us, so changes have taken place,” she explained.
She underscored the importance of public sensitization to encourage the adoption of electric buses, adding that they are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and align with global transportation trends.
“I will once again work with my minister to ensure that because it’s a good thing. It’s environmentally friendly and also cheaper and so once we are able sensitize the public about the benefits, I think it will work. We will find good companies that will be able to give us the best with that and I will work with my Minister to see how best we can do that so that we can be part of the global world,” she added.
Her nomination was made in accordance with Articles 78(1) and 79(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which empower the President to appoint ministers and deputy ministers in consultation with Parliament.
If approved, Madam Affo-Toffey will assist the Transport Minister in implementing the Mahama-led government’s policy objectives, particularly in advancing sustainable and innovative transport solutions.
