The Government of Ghana has announced a shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in Bawku and surrounding areas following a recent surge in violence that threatens to derail ongoing peace efforts.
In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, issued on Sunday, July 27, 2025, the government said the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to the area to maintain law and order and enforce intensified curfews aimed at safeguarding public safety.
“We assure the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement read.
The government commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his mediation efforts in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict. It also acknowledged the critical support of Nayiri and Zugraana in bringing the peace process to the brink of resolution before the latest round of killings.
“These very recent killings have necessitated drastic actions to protect all in the interests of the greater good,” the statement noted.
Citizens in the affected areas have been urged to refrain from violence and fully cooperate with the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure peace and security.
While expressing regret over the inconvenience the enforcement intervention may cause to peace-loving residents, the government reiterated its unwavering commitment to restoring lasting peace and stability in Bawku and other affected regions.
The government assured that special attention is being given to the safety of all residents, including students.
