Kenyan President William Ruto expresses condolences to Ghana over helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two ministers

President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, has extended heartfelt condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the government, and the people of Ghana following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 7, President Ruto expressed Kenya’s solidarity with Ghana in mourning what he described as a “profound loss.”

“We extend our condolences to H.E. President John Mahama, the Government, the people of Ghana and the bereaved families following a tragic helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two ministers,” the Kenyan President said.

“We stand in solidarity with Ghana in mourning this profound loss and offer our thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow. Rest In Peace,” he added.

The fatal Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter crash occurred in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region during a flight from Accra to Obuasi. Among the victims were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three Ghana Armed Forces personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

President Mahama has since declared a three-day national mourning period, with all flags flying at half-mast until further notice. Several international leaders and institutions; including the African Union Commission, the United Nations, the German Embassy, and Presidents of Namibia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria; have expressed their condolences and solidarity with Ghana in the wake of the national tragedy.
