The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic crash of a Ghana Air Force Z-9 military helicopter, which claimed eight lives, including several high-profile government officials.
In a statement dated Wednesday, August 6, the Ministry extended its condolences to the bereaved families, the Government of Ghana, and the general public.
“The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources extends its deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the eight distinguished Ghanaians who tragically lost their lives in the fatal helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.”
According to the Ministry, the victims were en route to the Black Park in Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) when tragedy struck, cutting short their lives and service to the nation.
The deceased are;
1. Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
2. Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (MP) – Minister for Environment, Science and Technology
3. Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture
4. Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress
5. Mr. Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate
6. Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala
7. Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu
8. Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
“We are especially heartbroken by the loss of Honourable Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Honourable Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, both Cabinet Ministers, who were scheduled to deliver messages of solidarity in support of this transformative programme. Their commitment to national development and their unwavering support for responsible mining will forever be remembered.”
In honour of the victims, President Mahama has declared a three-day national mourning period beginning Thursday, August 7, and suspended all official government activities for the week. National flags are to be flown at half-mast.
