The Electoral Commission of Ghana has paid tribute to Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, describing his death in a helicopter crash as a devastating loss to the nation’s democratic community.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 8, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa said the Commission received news of the tragedy “with shock and dismay.”
The crash, which claimed the lives of Dr Omane Boamah and seven others, occurred earlier on Wednesday, August 6 en route from Accra to Obuasi.
The Commission praised Dr Omane Boamah’s active role in the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), where he was known for his “vocal contributions” and commitment to strengthening Ghana’s electoral processes.
“His absence at our meetings will be deeply felt,” the statement read, adding that his efforts had left an enduring mark on the country’s democratic development.
The EC extended condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the government, the bereaved families, and the people of Ghana, assuring them of its thoughts and prayers during this period of mourning.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the Government, the bereaved families and the people of Ghana. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
