A Volta River Aviation helicopter carrying four people, including foreign nationals, was forced to make an emergency landing in Nkawkaw, Eastern Region, on Monday, August 11, 2025, after the pilot reported poor visibility.
The aircraft, a Jet A-1 with registration number 9G-AFW, was flying from Accra to Kumasi when worsening weather conditions near the Kwahu West Municipality prompted the precautionary landing at Ampekrom, close to the Nkawkaw bypass.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that all on board, including the pilot and crew, escaped unharmed.
This is not the first emergency involving the same helicopter. Earlier this year, it made an unscheduled landing at Ajumako Kokoben in the Central Region, a day after the country suffered one of its deadliest air tragedies.
That August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash claimed eight lives, including high-profile government and military officials: Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.
The rest were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
The nation remains in mourning as investigations into both incidents continue. Authorities are yet to comment on whether the recent spate of helicopter incidents will prompt new aviation safety reviews.
