The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the violence unleashed on students of Tamale Technical University (TaTU) by the police during a protest on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
In a statement signed by National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, the group described the incident as “absolutely unacceptable” and “undemocratic,” stressing that students could not be brutalized for exercising legitimate rights.
“As a youth wing, we believe that a well-trained and equipped police force in riot control should have acted professionally in calming down the students without the brutalization,” the statement noted.
The Youth Wing urged the Inspector-General of Police to call the Northern Regional Police Command to order and ensure accountability for what it termed “sordid and despicable violence.”
They also appealed to students and school authorities to remain calm and resolve the impasse through dialogue.
The statement reaffirmed solidarity with TaTU students and warned that Ghana’s democracy cannot thrive if the youth are suppressed when demanding accountability.
The condemnation followed a demonstration in which students accused management of financial mismanagement, neglect of welfare, and attempts to raise fees without due process. Protesters carried placards with messages such as “Director of Finance Must Go” and “Fix TaTU Now.”
The protest, which began peacefully, turned violent when police fired warning shots and used hot water to disperse the crowd. Students retaliated by throwing stones and burning tyres, leading to injuries.
Student leaders, including GRASAG President Abdul Ganiwu Inusah and SRC PRO Mahamud Musah, accused university authorities of misusing funds, sidelining student leadership, and withholding SRC monies.
They called for an independent forensic audit into the university’s finances and urgent reforms to improve conditions on campus.
