The Upper Manya Krobo District Assembly in the Eastern Region has extended support to 28 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to economically empower them.

The beneficiaries received various items, including deep freezers, ice chests, cassava milling machines, and cheques to boost their livelihoods.

Notably, a visually impaired university student, Emmanuel Kwadwo Sackey, who has gained admission to the University of Health and Allied Sciences to study Public Health Administration, was presented with a laptop to aid his education.

District Chief Executive (DCE) Emmanuel Kwasi Lawer said the Assembly has prioritized PWDs in the disbursement of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF), stressing that the move is to help ease their plight.

“President John Dramani Mahama during a workshop for MMDCEs cautioned us to use the district assembly common fund judiciously and religiously. He also requested us that the mandate of the act which gives the persons with disability the opportunity to have a share of the common fund.

His Excellency the President of the Republic John Dramani Mahama mandated all MMDCEs to make sure that the share of people with disability should not be taken for granted.”

He added that the Assembly will monitor the beneficiaries and provide technical support to ensure the items are put to good use.

Member of Parliament for Upper Manya Krobo, Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, urged PWDs in the district to register with the Department of Social Welfare to benefit from future allocations of the fund.

Emmanuel Kwadwo Sackey, the visually impaired student, expressed gratitude to the government and the Assembly, noting that the laptop would greatly support his academic journey.

“I have gained admission at the University so I went to the Assembly and asked if I can be given a laptop which will aide in my learning to pursue my academic career and you see I have gotten it.

This show that our President and his team are listening government and they care for the this disable. The laptop when configured will help me read, learn and do everything as able persons,” said Emmanuel Kwadwo Sackey, visually impaired student.

Government’s decision to uncap the DACF has significantly increased direct funding to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, making more resources available for local development and grassroots governance.
