NPP’s miserable loss in 2024 calls for new leadership – Okere MP

Daniel Nana Addo-Kenneth says the NPP’s painful 2024 electoral defeat calls for a change in leadership.

The Member of Parliament for Okere, Hon. Daniel Nana Addo Kenneth, has openly declared his support for Dr. Bryan Acheampong in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, describing him as the most suitable candidate to unite and reposition the party for victory in 2028.

According to the MP, the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections was a painful and miserable one that calls for introspection and change – not only in strategy, but also in leadership.

“We went into an election and we lost painfully and miserably. And so it’s important that we change the way we do things. Changing the way we do things is not just about the issues; it’s also about the individuals and their capacities,” he said in an interview with GHone TV and Starr FM when Dr. Bryan Acheampong met delegates in the constituency.

Nana Addo-Kenneth revealed that although many party members, including himself, supported Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the previous elections, the dynamics have changed with new contenders in the race.

“In these elections, there are additional candidates. And in my honest opinion and belief, I think that it is Dr. Bryan Acheampong who can rally all of us together,” he emphasized.

He explained that considering the current internal challenges within the NPP, including what he described as “the level of indiscipline and disintegration,” the party needs a strong and unifying personality to bring everyone together.

“We need somebody who is not too mild in this whole conflict business; someone who can unite all of us and bring all of us on board. And for me, that is Dr. Bryan Acheampong,” the Okere MP stressed.

He further noted that political parties choose candidates not only based on competence but also on strategic positioning, adding that Dr. Acheampong is “strategically placed to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.”

Touching on his relationship with his political father and predecessor, Hon. Dan Botwe, who was campaign chairman for Dr. Bawumia in 2024, the MP said he had consulted him before making his declaration.

“Dan Botwe is my godfather and my everything. But he is now retired and a senior citizen of the party. He has decided to remain neutral in this election to help bring the party together after the primaries,” he explained.

Hon. Addo Kenneth also dismissed suggestions that his endorsement could have political consequences, saying internal differences in opinion are normal within a democratic party.

“There are no consequences. We are all one family. Whoever wins, we will all come together and rally behind the person. The only consequence in politics is your relationship with your people and the good work you do,” he said.

He expressed confidence that delegates in Okere and across the country will make the right choice in the primaries.

“I have my choice, and I’ve given them enough reasons. I believe the delegates are discerning and will listen to everyone’s message. I’m very convinced that Dr. Bryan Acheampong will not only win Okere but the entire country and become the next presidential candidate,” he concluded.

The Presidential Primary scheduled for January 31, 2026, is keenly being contested by Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
