Police call on AG to expedite action on Afenyo-Markin assault case, demand update

The Ghana Police Service has urged the Attorney-General’s Office to provide an update and expedite legal action over Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s alleged assault on a police officer.

The Ghana Police Service has called on the Office of the Attorney-General (AG) to update the public and expedite legal action in the case involving the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over assault on police officer during a public protest in May 2025.

According to official documents, the police have completed their inquiries and forwarded the docket to the AG’s office for advice and further legal processes.

The incident, which occurred during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration in Accra, was captured in a one-minute, thirteen-second video clip showing a physical altercation between protesters and police officers deployed for crowd control.

Preliminary analysis by the Cybercrime Unit of the CID confirmed that Afenyo-Markin was seen striking a police officer, identified as G/Cpl. Forson Abel of the Tesano District.

The officer, who was on lawful duty, later filed a formal complaint on May 6, 2025, and provided a statement, supported by witness accounts from senior police officers who were present at the scene. The police subsequently issued him a medical form for treatment and evidence documentation.

Afenyo-Markin, however, countered the allegation with a complaint claiming he had been assaulted by the officer. The Police Service accepted his petition and took statements from his witnesses, Sammi Awuku and Richard Ahiagbah.

Following a comprehensive investigation, including forensic video analysis and the review of CCTV footage obtained from the National Signals Bureau and National Intelligence Bureau, the Police Service concluded that there was no evidence to support Afenyo-Markin’s counter-claim.

Despite being issued a medical form for independent examination, the MP reportedly failed to submit it and has not responded to several police follow-ups.

In a formal communication addressed to the Attorney-General, the police wrote, “I respectfully forward the attached Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Duplicate Case Docket with R.O. No. 129/2025 to you for study and advice, please.”

The letter, signed by Deputy Superintendent Justice Oppong on behalf of the Director-General of CID, outlines the findings of the investigation and requests the AG’s review and further direction on prosecution.

With the case docket already in the AG’s possession since June 2025, the police are now urging the Attorney-General’s office to provide a public update and indicate the next steps in pursuing justice.

They noted that “the investigation has been concluded,” emphasizing that “the public deserves to be informed on the progress of this case and the way forward.”
