Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has announced plans to conduct a mass burial for unclaimed bodies following severe congestion at its mortuary.
In a public notice, the hospital disclosed that its mortuary facility is currently operating at full capacity, prompting the decision to clear long-standing unclaimed remains to create space for ongoing operations.
According to the release, about 320 unclaimed, unknown, and unidentified bodies are expected to be included in the exercise if they remain unclaimed by the stated deadline.
The hospital has therefore appealed to relatives and next of kin of deceased persons whose bodies are at the mortuary to urgently come forward and make the necessary arrangements.
“The hospital mortuary is currently full,” the statement said, adding that families must contact the hospital on or before January 18, 2026, to claim their deceased relatives.
Korle Bu further explained that any bodies that remain unclaimed after the deadline will be buried in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
The hospital assured the public that the mass burial will be carried out “in accordance with approved procedures”, stressing that the exercise is a necessary public health and administrative measure.
Management urged the public to treat the notice with urgency to avoid distressing outcomes for affected families.
