Political analyst, Dr. Jonathan Asante-Otchere, has raised concerns over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to exclude national security personnel from supervising the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.
The primaries, held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, saw Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secure the NPP flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 elections. The exercise was largely peaceful, with the Ghana Police Service providing security across more than 300 polling centres nationwide.
Ahead of the primaries, the NPP instructed the National Security and other operatives to stay away from the election process.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr. Asante-Otchere said the move raised questions.
“But the question that came to mind is, why are you insistent on prescribing national security from getting involved? After all, national security, if you are to look at their function, obviously to gather intelligence and then probably preempt possible chaos…” he said.
He suggested that the decision might be tied to historical concerns.
“Was it the case that when your government was in power that national security was used for some ill purpose? That’s probably something we are having to think about,” he added.
Despite these concerns, Dr. Asante-Otchere acknowledged that the primaries were conducted without violence and praised the quick concession speeches from losing candidates.
