Two siblings have been discovered dead in an open pit filled with water within a newly developed house compound in Abokobi, surburb of Somanya in Eastern region.
The victims have been identified as eight-year-old Jason Teye Mensah, a Class Two pupil, and nine-year-old Nathaniel Ayernor Kofi, a Class Three pupil. Both attended Samsalo Preparatory School at Odumase Krobo.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on Thursday, February 12, 2026 around 6:00pm.
According to family members, the boys had returned home from school as usual. Their mother, who was at her shop at the time, received a call from the children, informing her that they were hungry. She advised them to eat some rice that had already been prepared at home.
However, when she later closed from work and returned home, the children were nowhere to be found.
Their grandmother, Doris Tetteh, recounted that the boys would normally run to welcome their mother whenever she arrived home, but on that day, there was no sign of them.
Alarmed by their absence, the family began searching the compound and surrounding areas.
The situation took a tragic turn when their slippers were found near an uncovered manhole within the house compound.
A search around the area led to the discovery of the lifeless bodies of the two boys in the water-filled pit.
They were removed and rushed to the hospital but pronouced dead on arrival.
Somanya District Police Commander, Superintendent Kingsley Abrokwa said investigation has commenced into the incident.
