The Ministry of Education has condemned in the strongest terms the recent acts of student violence captured in viral videos, which appear to involve students from two schools in the Central Region.
The incident, reportedly occurring on Thursday, February 19, 2026, involved a physical confrontation between a student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and students from the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) during this year’s district inter-schools athletics competition in Agona Swedru.
In response, the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has been directed to investigate the matter.
According to the Ministry, he will meet with the Central Regional Director of GES, the district directors overseeing the schools, and the heads of the institutions involved. This meeting is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the GES headquarters in Accra.
Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, emphasized that the Ministry is taking a very serious view of the incident.
“Even as we await the report from the Director General of the GES, let me state that the Minister for Education and I take a very serious view of these acts of violence. Consequently, the culprits and perpetrators can expect the most severe sanctions,” he said in a statement.
The Ghana Police Service has also launched an investigation into the incident, promising to identify and hold all individuals involved accountable. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have pledged to provide updates as they progress.
The Ministry and law enforcement agencies are urging schools and students across the country to exercise restraint and promote safe and peaceful participation in extracurricular activities.
