Over 40,000 registered voters in the Ayawaso East Constituency are casting their ballots today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to elect a new Member of Parliament.
The by-election follows the passing of the area’s former MP, Mahama Naser Toure, who died after a short illness at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
He was serving his fourth term in Parliament and held key roles, including Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee and membership of the Roads and Transport as well as the House and Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committees.
Five candidates are contesting the seat: Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and independent candidates David Kanor and Umar Sanda Mohammed.
The Electoral Commission engaged political parties through an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting ahead of the polls to ensure a smooth electoral process.
Security has been deployed across polling centres as residents decide who will represent them in Parliament.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has sacked Umar Sanda from the party after contesting as independent candidate.
