Concerns over Mahama using his brother’s jet justified – Ako Gunn

NDC’s Godwin Ako Gunn says Ghanaians’ concerns about President Mahama using his brother’s jet are valid and urges full transparency from officials.

Godwin Ako Gunn, Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has emphasized that Ghanaians’ concerns over President John Mahama’s use of his brother Ibrahim Mahama’s private jets are valid and must be addressed openly.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Thursday, March 12, 2026, Ako Gunn said that while the arrangement may reduce costs for the state, the lack of public explanation has caused speculation and uncertainty.

“The concerns people are raising are justified. We wouldn’t say that they are not justified… we must explain to the people of Ghana why this is happening,” he stated.

He explained that using Ibrahim Mahama’s jets is financially practical for the government.

“When it comes to cost, I can tell you all sincerely that it is cheaper to use his brother’s jets than to use commercial flights. And what we have promised is never to… pay for a private jet and fly on that,” Ako Gunn said.

The NDC official stressed that clear communication is key to maintaining public confidence.

“It doesn’t look tidy. It doesn’t look good because we’ve not been able to explain ourselves,” he added, noting that public understanding would prevent misconceptions about impropriety.

He also highlighted Ibrahim Mahama’s contributions beyond the private jets.

“As I speak to you, his first jet is even converted to an air ambulance available to every Ghanaian. So if somebody is doing all these things, I think we must appreciate,” he said.

Ako Gunn insisted that transparency must accompany even cost-effective arrangements.

“Let’s not discourage people from doing some of the things that they do. Let’s rather appreciate… and the most important thing is that it doesn’t smack any corruption,” he said.

He called on the government to publicly clarify all aspects of the use of Ibrahim Mahama’s jets, including costs, availability, and arrangements, to reassure citizens that state resources are being managed responsibly.
