Ghanaian rapper Medikal has weighed in on the upcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards, highlighting deserving acts and addressing conversations around nominations in this year’s Artist of the Year category.
Speaking in an interview on Starr Showbiz with Feeling Daddy, Medikal said he could not definitively state whether any artiste was unfairly excluded from the top category, despite ongoing public debate.
“That one, I can’t say that. I can’t say that,” he noted when asked if some artistes deserved a spot but were overlooked.
However, he pointed to the impact of DopeNation, suggesting their omission could be questioned given their consistency and reach.
“You see, Dope Nation has gone global and everything… If you nominate them, it will make sense, though. Because Dope Nation is one of the artists where… they are very hard-working, though. Very, very hard-working,” he said.
Medikal also shared his views on emerging talents in the industry, naming rising acts he believes have strong potential to make an impact in the coming years.
“Right now, there are two new cats… Laled and Esuman… he has, like, a massive potential,” he said, adding that he listens to their music frequently and supports talents that bring something different to the scene.
On performance critiques of newer artistes, he urged patience, noting that growth takes time.
“When you are commencing… you don’t just come off as the best performer. It starts small, small,” he explained.
The rapper, who is also in contention in this year’s awards scheme, emphasized that artistry evolves with experience and creativity, both on stage and in the studio.
This year’s TGMA Artist of the Year category features top names including Stonebwoy, Wendy Shay, Black Sherif, and Diana Hamilton, among others, sparking widespread debate among fans and industry watchers.
Beyond the awards conversation, Medikal maintained that the music industry thrives on creativity, consistency, and support for emerging talent, while encouraging fans to appreciate the broader entertainment value of the space.
