The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has disclosed that new mining legislation will soon be presented to Parliament, aimed at boosting local participation and transparency in the sector.
Speaking in Damongo during a courtesy call on the King and Overlord of Gonja Land, the Minister explained that the proposed law will establish district mining committees to oversee the approval of mining licences.
“Our communities and districts that have natural resources deserve to be empowered,” he said. “They need to have a say in decision-making. Very soon, we will present the new mining law to Parliament.”

Minister Armah-Kofi Buah added that the visit to Damongo was also part of efforts to address illegal mining in the northern enclave. “We are here in Damongo to seek the blessings of the Overlord as we tour mining areas across the northern enclave,” he noted.
The King and Overlord of Gonja Land, Yagbonwura Jira Biikunto-Jewura Soale I, through the Mankpanwura, highlighted the region’s wealth of natural resources and emphasized the need for stronger collaboration to regularize mining activities.
“The region has salt, gold, and other natural resources, but many of the youth resort to illegal mining due to lack of jobs,” he said.
He further called on the Minister to ensure proper documentation and regulation of these resources to attract investors and create sustainable employment opportunities.
“These resources need to be properly documented. I urge you, Honourable Minister, to ensure this is done to attract investors and create decent jobs for our youth,” he added.

The proposed legislation reflects the government’s commitment to empowering local communities while promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices in Ghana.
