President John Dramani Mahama has announced that no senior high school in Ghana will operate the Double-Track System by 2027 under the government’s new STARR-J programme.
Speaking during the commissioning of a PET Scan facility at the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, President Mahama disclosed that government has secured a $300 million World Bank facility to upgrade 50 senior high schools nationwide.
“The STARR-J project is going to assist Ghana government achieve its target of bringing an end to double track in our secondary school system by next year,” he stated.
“By 2027 there should be no secondary school implementing a double track system in Ghana.”
According to the President, the Transformative Secondary Education for Access, Results and Relevance for Jobs (STARR-J) initiative will see 30 Category C schools upgraded to Category B, while 20 Category B schools will be elevated to Category A.
He said the programme would also operationalise community day schools to reduce pressure on boarding facilities and improve access to quality secondary education.
“This will help ease the growing pressure on boarding facilities and expand access to quality secondary education closer to urban families,” he added.
