The 2028 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned what he describes as an “endless assault” on the fundamental rights of his party’s members by the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
In a statement released from the Office of His Excellency on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia alleged that the government has engaged in a pattern of intimidation, including arrests and “unconscionable bail conditions,” since taking office on January 7, 2025.
The Vice President specifically highlighted the arrest and detention of David Essandoh, who was reportedly held for “lamenting on social media about the return of dumsor” and the “bizarre” decision to take the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, into custody as evidence of a crackdown of free speech by the Mahama administration
Dr. Bawumia characterized these actions as a coordinated effort between the executive branch, state investigative agencies, and elements within the judiciary to silence political opposition.
“These actions undermine free speech and are setting Ghana’s democracy backwards,” the statement read.
The NPP flagbearer issued a direct warning to state officials participating in what he termed an “unholy enterprise,” declaring that a “day of accountability” is inevitable for those who abuse state power.
Dr. Bawumia, however, urged NPP supporters to remain firm and continue holding the government accountable to its promises.
“We fought hard for this democracy and as a party, we cannot surrender it to intimidation from those who possess temporary power today,” he concluded.
