Host nation Ghana delivered a memorable performance on Day 3 of the 2026 CAA African Senior Athletics Championships at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, winning multiple medals and booking places in key finals after a difficult start to the competition.
Ghana’s medal breakthrough came in the women’s 400 meters, where Florence Agyemang powered to a bronze medal with a personal best time of 51.87 seconds, earning the country its first medal of the championship after going medal-less in the opening two days. Moments later, Alex Amankwah added another bronze medal in the men’s 800 meters final after clocking 1 minute 46 seconds in a thrilling race.
Speaking after the event, Amankwah expressed delight at his achievement, saying Ghana’s support inspired his strong finish in the final stretch. “I’m really happy, Ghana’s magic pulled me through the last 100 meters,” he said.
The celebrations continued in the field events as Esther Obenewaa secured a silver medal in the women’s high jump to give Team Ghana its third medal of the day. Obenewaa credited fellow Ghanaian athlete Rose Amoaniwaa for motivating her performance. “Rose Amoaniwaa told me to make it to the podium,” she revealed after winning silver in front of the home crowd.

Later in the evening, Ghana’s men’s 4×100 meters relay team produced another impressive display by winning Heat 2 in a time of 38.69 seconds to qualify for the final scheduled for Friday evening. Team captain Joseph Paul Amoah, popularly known as Joe Paul, said the team remains focused on achieving ultimate success despite strong expected competition from Nigeria and Botswana in the final. “Our goal is to win the ultimate,” he stated confidently after the race. The strong performances on Day 3 have reignited excitement among Ghanaian fans as the host nation looks to build momentum for the remainder of the championships.
