Veteran Highlife musician Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has questipned the artistic direction of rapper, Mohammed Ismail Sherif, known globally as Black Sherif.
Speaking in an interview on Starr Chat with host Bola Ray on Thursday, April 2, 2026, the hifhlife icon offered a blend of praise and critical counsel for the younger artist.
While acknowledging Black Sherif’s undeniable commercial success, Ambolley argued that the rapper has yet to carve out a distinct, culturally grounded identity.
”Black Sherif is doing the best he can, but he has no identity,” Ambolley stated. “He would do much better if he developed an identity of his own,” he said.
Since his explosive entry into the mainstream in 2021 with “First Sermon” and “Second Sermon,” Black Sherif has become one of Africa’s most streamed artists.
His unique blend of Highlife, Drill, and Trap, often referred to as “Afro-oat”, has earned him international acclaim and collaborations with global icons
