The Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) have announced a major technical fault at the Ghana Gas Processing Plant, resulting in a temporary shutdown of operations.

The incident, according to a statement dated Wednesday, April 15, 2026, was triggered by the failure of the Burner Management System (BMS) controller for the Heat Medium System (HMS), described by officials as a significant technical malfunction.

The shutdown has led to a reduction in gas supply to thermal power plants, causing intermittent power disruptions in parts of the country.

“The public is hereby informed that the Ghana Gas Processing Plant has experienced a significant technical fault following the complete failure of the Burner Management System (BMS) controller for the Heat Medium System (HMS),” the statement said.

Officials indicated that initial assessments show the affected system will require a full replacement, necessitating an emergency shutdown of the plant.

“This unforeseen development has necessitated an emergency shut-down of the plant, leading to a temporary curtailment of gas supply to thermal power plants,” it added.

The disruption has affected power generation, with engineers working to stabilise and restore operations.

“A comprehensive technical and safety risk assessment is currently underway to determine the most effective and secure pathway for restoring operations in the shortest possible time,” the statement noted.

A technical team has since been deployed to work continuously on replacing the faulty system and restoring gas supply.

“A dedicated team of engineers is working diligently, around the clock, to replace the damaged system and expedite the restoration process,” it said.

The statement added that, subject to ongoing assessments, efforts to restore operations are expected to begin within the day.

The GNGC and GRIDCo also apologised for the inconvenience and appealed to the public for patience as repairs continue.
