NDC has no intention of abolishing OSP – Hamza Suhuyini

Hassan Suhuyini has set the record straight on the future of Ghana's independent anti-corruption agency amidst escalating political and legal friction.

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication team, Hamza Suhuyini has described as ‘baseless’ claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the NDC intends to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Speaking on GH Today on GHOne TV on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Suhuyini clarified the party’s position following recent legal friction involving the anti-corruption body.

While acknowledging that the NDC had raised concerns about the OSP’s efficiency while in opposition, Suhuyini framed these critiques as a roadmap for improvement.

“NDC to have issues with the Special Prosecutor? Absolutely not. We promised a reset, and if there were concerns that we raised in opposition about how to get it to work efficiently, it is our responsibility to ensure that we actually get it to work,” he said.

According to him, it’s never true that the “NDC-instigated” the action against the OSP insisting that the case was instead the result of a legal battle initiated by the Special Prosecutor himself against a private citizen.

“But even in the midst of all that, what is before the High Court is not an NDC-instigated suit. It is a—the Special Prosecutor who took somebody to court, a citizen of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.

He further stated the John Mahana administration is rather focused on providing it with the necessary “legal backing” to ensure its mandate is carried out effectively.

“I can sit in this chair and assure [civil society] that as far as His Excellency President Mahama is concerned, that office is not going anywhere,” Suhuyini stated.

He acknowledged the “legitimate anxiety” of civil society organizations (CSOs) but assured them that the party shares their interest in a functional anti-corruption body.

“As for our civil society friends, I can understand their anxiety—and legitimate, because they are interested in getting an anti-corruption body to work like the Special Prosecutor. I can sit in this chair and assure them that as far as His Excellency President Mahama is concerned, that office is not going anywhere.

At best, the government will do everything to give it the needed legal backing to be able to continue as far as its mandate is concerned,” he assured.
