The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno says recent armoured vehicles and other operational accoutrements provided by government is changing the warfare against armed robbery operations in the country.

According to the IGP, equipment has given the police protective shield hence coupled with its tactical maneuvers have been able to deal with dreaded armed robbers terrorising Ghanaians.

“I would like to convey my sincere appreciation for your steadfast, hands on and timely support in enhancing Ghana’s security framework, your pursuit or reforms and retooling under your leadership has been instrumental in enabling us to carry out our mandate effectively, the public can clearly see the impact when the necessary resources are made available meaningful results follow.”

He hastened to add that “I want to hint that with the support of the armoured vehicles that the President gave to us we have been able to foil a lot of robberies recently, had it not been the armoured vehicles arm robbers would have shot into the car killing our men, but we have been able to arrest all those arm robbers.”

The IGP narrated that “Few weeks ago on the Atebubu stretch where our men were driving the armour and they got to the point where the robbers were robbing, they shot several arms including AK 47 Asault Rifles into the vehicle but they were not able to penetrate to kill our men, the President has helped us a lot and we have been able to arrest all those arm robbers on that stretch.”

The IGP said this during commissioning of a new Divisional Police Headquarters in Odumase Krobo in Eastern region.

The IGP said the facility with enhance police operations in the area and boost security.

“I am pleased to announce that the President is also donating a brand new Pickup and two motorbikes to support the operational days of this new division, this will enhance mobility ,improve Police response times and strengthen the overall effectiveness”.He said.

The IGP charged management of the facility to rise to the expectations that comes with responsibility to work diligently to earn and maintain the trust of the people, let actions reflect the core values of the police Service by serving with integrity, adding “remember that the effectiveness of the police depends not only on authority, but also on public trust ,respect and cooperation”.

President Mahama in his address also commended the IGP and current Police Management Board for promoting police officers who discharge their duties exceptionally.

He said the incentives in the form of promotion will enable the police to work with fairness , integrity and have courage to do what is right at all times.

The President reiterated his government commitment to continue to supporting the police administration but encouraged them to also exhibit the highest standards of conduct in return.

He said “recently several police officers across the country took the exams to enter the police college for training to become senior officers in the service, the cut off mark was placed at 53%, those who got 53% and above were 700 officers, there was another who got between 50% and 53% so it means that they passed but, they did not meet the cut off mark, they are also another 300 of them and so I have asked the IGP to add the 300 to the 700, all of them who got above 50% will go to the police college”.

The President indicated that the occasion of commissioning Divisional Police Headquarters on Krobo land is more significant by its historical contest because this month marks 30 years since the passing of a great Ghanaian and a proud son of Krobo land Mr. E.R.T Majitey the first African Inspector General Police.

He said “he was one of excellent, discipline and visionary leadership , he laid a strong foundation for the Ghana Police Service and demonstrated what it means to serve with honour and distinction , it is therefore fitting that we are commissioning this important facility in his homeland as a tribute to his enduring contributions to national security and public service, may his legacy continue to inspire generations of police officers and public servants across our country” the President eulogised Mr. E.R.T Majitey.

Finally, the President encouraged the people of the krobo land to work closely with the police service, provide timely information and actively participate in community policing initiatives since security is a shared responsibility and together we can create an environment where crime has no place and where peace and development can flourish.

“Looking ahead, government will continue to invest in infrastructure, logistics, human resource development within the police service, we will deepen reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability and public trust.”

“We will strengthen collaboration among all security agencies to ensure a coordinated and effective approach to national security and we will continue to uphold the rule of law as the cornerstone of our democracy” he added.
