Veteran Ghanaian record producer Appiah Dankwah, popularly known as Appietus has revealed that he is working on what he believes could become another iconic campaign song for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Starr Showbiz with Feeling Daddy, Appietus hinted that the upcoming song could have the same enduring impact as some of his previous political productions.
“I’m doing another one for Bawumia. It’s going to be something else; it’s going to be awesome and will stay relevant for a very long time,” he disclosed.
Political campaign songs have become an important feature of Ghana’s electoral landscape. Since the NPP adopted Cindy Thompson’s Awurade Kasa during the 2000 general elections, music has played a significant role in political campaigns.
However, it was in the lead-up to the 2008 elections that campaign music reached another level with Nana Ye Winner, performed by Daddy Lumba and produced by Appietus. The song became a nationwide sensation and remains one of the most memorable political campaign songs in Ghana’s history.
Since then, both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have consistently commissioned campaign songs ahead of general elections.
Recounting how Nana Ye Winner came to life, Appietus revealed on Starr 103.5 FM that the instrumental was originally produced without Daddy Lumba in mind.
“Nana Akomea contacted me and said they needed a massive song for His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, so I should come up with something. I made a beat and played it for him. He then asked who I was currently working with in the studio, and I told him Daddy Lumba. They immediately said they wanted him to sing the song,” Appietus told host Feeling Daddy.
Despite the song’s enormous success and popularity, Appietus disclosed that he did not benefit financially from the project until the latter years of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.
The renowned producer also revealed during the interview that he is already in the studio crafting another campaign anthem for Dr. Bawumia.
Beyond political music, Appietus remains one of Ghana’s most influential music producers, having produced several hit songs including Shody, Angelina, and Kakyere Me by Praye, Azonto Fiesta by Sarkodie, and Number One by K.K. Fosu, among many others.
