The government has halted plans to site a 24-hour model market near a school in Mankranso in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region.
According to Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, Stan Xoese Dogbe, the project was halted by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, who moved quickly once the issue reached the Regional Coordinating Council.
“I have been in touch with my brother, the regional minister Frank Amoakohene, who, as always, is on top of the situation and has long since stopped the process of building the market near the school,” Dogbe wrote.
He made clear that the choice of the land next to the school was not a government decision.
“As soon as the Regional Coordinating Council was alerted, the minister ordered the process stopped,” he wrote further.
Dogbe explained that the community currently has no other suitable land available for the model market.
“That shortage led to the original proposal near the school. Officials have now directed residents to identify a more appropriate site so the project can move forward,” he wrote.
The clarification comes after a video circulated on social media raising concerns about the proposed location.
The NPP Communications Officer for Ahafo Ano South West had alleged in a video that the Assembly was about demolishing a classroom block built in 2022 to construct the 24-hour economy market.
The Assembly had however denied the allegations.
The 24-hour model market is intended to expand trading opportunities and support local economic activity in Mankranso and the wider district.
Dogbe thanked the public for showing interest in development issues affecting communities across the country.
