Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being likely to deploy misinformation and disinformation aggressively as part of efforts to retain power in the 2028 general elections.
According to him, the strategy would involve what he described as “fake news” and “manufactured distractions” intended to divert public attention from national issues on which he claims the government has failed to deliver.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the strategy was not new, alleging that the NDC had used similar tactics while in opposition.
“This is not new, it is a political tool they have mastered,” he said.
He urged Ghanaians to scrutinise claims and information presented to them, arguing that some accusations and stories promoted by the NDC while in opposition had subsequently been contradicted by facts, exposed as misleading or proven false.
“Every Ghanaian must understand this strategy. We must stay vigilant, question what we are told and refuse to be distracted from the issues that affect us,” he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said NPP members, officers and communicators have a particular responsibility to remain vigilant, disciplined and focused ahead of the 2028 elections.
He urged them to verify information, quickly challenge what they consider false claims and avoid allowing what he described as false propaganda to determine the party’s agenda.
“Check the facts, expose the lies quickly and never allow false propaganda to dictate our agenda,” he said.
The Minority Leader further urged the NPP to maintain its focus on what he described as the government’s “broken promises” and the everyday challenges facing Ghanaians.
He also called on party members to promote the vision of former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for Ghana.
“Above all, stay on message by promoting Dr Bawumia’s vision for Ghana with clarity and conviction while working relentlessly towards victory in 2028,” he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin concluded his message with a call for the party to maintain its focus on its political messaging as it prepares for the next general elections.
“Expose the lies. Focus on the issues. Promote the vision. Win 2028,” he stated.
