The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released outstanding Capitation Grant arrears for 2023 to District Education Directorates for onward transfer to public basic schools.
In a letter dated Monday, September 14, 2026, and addressed to all Regional Directors, the GES said the funds had already been transferred to the accounts of the various District Education Directorates.
“Management of Ghana Education Service wishes to inform you that Capitation Grant arrears for 2023 has been transferred to the various accounts of the District Education Directorates for onward disbursement to the schools.”
The Service directed Regional Directors to ensure that the money reaches the schools on or before the reopening of the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year.
According to the letter, the funds transferred to the District accounts include the Sports and Culture component for District Offices. The Regional Sports and Culture components, however, have been transferred separately to designated Regional office accounts.
GES said the timely release of the funds is intended to enable heads of basic schools to operate seamlessly when schools reopen.
The Service also indicated that a team from its headquarters would visit the regions to monitor the disbursement and urged Regional Directors to ensure that the funds are transferred to schools immediately.
The development comes against the background of recurring concerns over delays in the payment of Capitation Grants, which are intended to support the operations of public basic schools.
The grant replaced school fees in public basic schools and helps fund school-level activities and other non-tuition costs.
