President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of a US$1.3 billion mixed-use development at Accra’s airport enclave.
The Sentuo Airport Garden City Project is designed to bring together residential accommodation, hospitality, conferencing, healthcare, retail and leisure facilities in one development.
The project will include about 582 premium apartments, a hotel, a conference facility with capacity for 2,500 people, healthcare services, a shopping mall, landscaped gardens and 503 parking spaces.
Addressing the gathering at the sod-cutting ceremony on September 15, President Mahama said the project would add to the infrastructure and investment activity already taking place around the airport.
He said the airport enclave was an important gateway into the country and therefore required coordinated development.
The President also highlighted the potential for the project to create employment and support Ghanaian enterprises.
He said construction would provide opportunities for professionals and artisans, while the hospitality and conferencing components could benefit suppliers, restaurants, transport operators and other businesses.
Mahama called on the developers to deliver the project according to the proposal and to involve Ghanaian partners.
“The scale of the proposal carries a responsibility to deliver well, work with Ghanaian partners and build facilities that serve their users and the surrounding community for many years.”
He also urged state institutions to cooperate with the developers in resolving implementation challenges.
The President said the development would complement government’s own investment in the airport area and contribute to Accra’s positioning as a business, tourism and international conference destination.
He expressed confidence that the project would generate sustained employment and expand opportunities for Ghanaian businesses.
