Member of Parliament for Jomoro in the Western Region and Deputy Transport Minister, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has extended scholarship support to more than 1,000 brilliant but needy Senior High School (SHS) students in the constituency.
The initiative, which is in its sixth edition, brought together beneficiaries from 111 public and private schools across the Jomoro Constituency.
The scholarship package is targeted at candidates who have completed the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and are preparing to enter various second-cycle institutions.
The latest edition represents an increase from the more than 600 BECE candidates who benefited from the initiative in 2025.
Madam Affo-Toffey started the initiative in 2021, before she became a Member of Parliament, as part of efforts to support young people in the constituency to pursue their education.
Beneficiaries from communities across Jomoro received educational and essential items, including trunks, mattresses, chop boxes, exercise books and mosquito nets.
Female beneficiaries, who constituted a significant proportion of the beneficiaries, also received sanitary pads to support their menstrual needs.
The initiative is intended to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians and help ensure that financial difficulties do not become a barrier to the educational aspirations of deserving students.
The presentation ceremony, held at Bonyere Junction, brought together parents and guardians, traditional leaders including chiefs and queen mothers, constituency executives, dignitaries and other stakeholders.
‘This is more than a scholarship’
Speaking about the initiative, Madam Affo-Toffey described the programme as an investment in the future of children in Jomoro.
“For me, this is more than a scholarship; it is an investment in the future of our children and a way of easing the burden on parents,” she said.
She said the initiative would continue beyond her tenure as MP and expressed the hope that her successor would sustain it.
“This has come to stay, and even after I have retired, whoever would take after me should be willing to continue and make sure the people of Jomoro benefit, and I am willing to support whoever would succeed me,” she said.
According to the MP, seeing beneficiaries from previous editions successfully progress to tertiary education remains one of her major motivations for sustaining the initiative.
She said the achievements of past beneficiaries continue to inspire her to expand efforts aimed at giving young people in the constituency opportunities to pursue their educational ambitions.
Madam Affo-Toffey also expressed appreciation to parents and guardians, traditional authorities, constituency executives, dignitaries and other stakeholders who supported the initiative.
“Our children are Jomoro’s future, and I remain committed to giving them every opportunity to succeed,” she said.
She also expressed gratitude to God for enabling the scholarship initiative to reach its sixth year.
MCE commends Affo-Toffey
The Jomoro Municipal Chief Executive, Benedict Boadi, commended Madam Affo-Toffey for her continued support for education in the municipality.
Mr Boadi said the education sector had received support from the MP in various ways, including the construction of school buildings in several communities.
He said he could attest to the MP’s contribution to the municipality and described the support as deserving of recognition and encouragement.
Mr Boadi also said the development of the education sector in the municipality was benefiting from the government’s governance and support under President John Dramani Mahama.
He announced that October would be observed as a “commissioning month” in the municipality, during which several completed projects, including school buildings, would be commissioned with support from the MP and the assembly.
The latest scholarship initiative adds to efforts to support students in Jomoro and encourage them to remain focused on their education, with the expectation that beneficiaries will progress to tertiary education and contribute to the development of the constituency and Ghana.
