The government is planning a major facelift of principal roads across Accra ahead of Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in March 2027, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama for roads in Accra to be brought to the status of a capital city.
Roads Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza said the exercise would focus largely on the resealing of key roads to improve their condition, enhance road safety and give the capital a major infrastructural facelift ahead of the national celebrations. He also stated that Oswal Investments Construction has been awarded the contract to undertake the exercise.
He said stalled road projects, including the Kasoa and Ofankor roads, would also be completed as part of efforts to improve connectivity and ease congestion along some of the capital’s busiest corridors.
Mr Agbodza further disclosed that work had resumed on the coastal road corridor stretching from Independence Square through Osu to Tema.
According to the Minister, the various projects form part of the government’s broader efforts to improve Accra’s road network and ensure the capital is ready to host activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in March 2027.
He said the planned works would contribute to improving the condition of major roads in the capital while supporting smoother movement ahead of the anniversary celebrations.
