Honeyworld has taken a significant step in advancing bulk export operations at the Port of Tema with the successful launch of the RAM Revolver Containerized Bulk Handling (CBH) System, in partnership with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
The system introduces a new approach to dry bulk exports through Shed-to-Ship/Pit-to-Ship loading. The system enables bulk cargo to be moved directly from its storage location into the vessel’s hatch. This initiative supports GPHA’s drive towards cleaner, more environmentally responsible port operations while expanding the options available to Ghana’s bulk exporters.
Rethinking the traditional method of bulk cargo handling
Traditionally, shea nuts arriving at Tema Port are discharged onto the quay apron before it’s loaded into the vessel using grabs. This exposes the commodity to additional handling and increases the risk of spillage into the sea.
The RAM Revolver CBH System offers an alternative. Specialised 20ft Revolver Containers are delivered to the client’s warehouse for loading, then sealed and transported to the quayside.
Mounted on a crane, the RAM Revolver grips and lifts each container, opens its lid and rotates it 360 degrees to discharge the commodity directly into the vessel’s hatch. The empty container is then returned to the warehouse for reuse.
By keeping the commodity enclosed until discharge, the system eliminates the need to dump loose shea nuts onto the quay apron before vessel loading, supporting cleaner handling and improved commodity protection.
A partnership for cleaner port operations
The introduction follows GPHA’s efforts to identify more efficient and environmentally responsible ways of handling bulk cargo. As part of this effort, the port engaged private-sector operators to explore alternatives to traditional bulk handling, which led to the Honeyworld-GPHA partnership to implement the RAM Revolver CBH System at Tema Port.
Reflecting on the milestone, the Director of Port, Tema, Mr Tabon Zuma, noted:
“Today, we have succeeded in changing the traditional form into the modern way of handling shea nuts.”
The Director confirmed that because the shea nuts are discharged directly into the vessel without being dumped onto the quay apron, the dirty cargo charge associated with traditional bulk handling does not apply. He also noted that the sealed containers make cargo diversion more difficult.
Delivering integrated logistics solutions for bulk exports
Our bulk export solution is supported by our warehousing, road freight services, and our and equipment fleet, whichincludes reach stackers, payloaders, forklifts, and a conveyor belt with weighing capability. Together, these capabilities enable us coordinate cargo handling more efficiently.
The successful implementation of the system at Tema Port marks an important milestone in our commitment to innovation. We continue to explore and adopt practical solutions that enhance our service delivery, reinforcing our position as the logistics solutions provider of choice.
