Spokesperson for the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has alleged that former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, is in critical condition following an assault during the chaotic parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
“Speaking to the media on Friday, July 11, Aboagye expressed grave concern over the violent scenes that unfolded at various polling stations.
As we speak, it’s important to know that there are people’s lives that are stake. From here we are going to visit Hawa Koomson who is currently fighting for her life. Why should any citizen battles for her survival because of election. There are people who were injured, I was there.”
Violence erupted at the St. Peter’s polling station during the rerun, with several individuals—including political figures and journalists—injured after a group of unidentified, heavily built men believed to be political thugs stormed the area.
Eyewitnesses described the attack as coordinated and targeted.
Among the injured were New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female polling agent, both of whom reportedly sustained facial injuries.
Hawa Koomson, who was present to support her party, was also reportedly assaulted during the melee.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is overseeing the rerun in 19 polling stations to address unresolved verification issues from the December 2024 general elections.
Out of 37 disputed polling stations, results from 18 had already been certified. The fresh voting is aimed at finalizing the collation process.
The exercise has been marred by political tension, with the NPP accusing the EC of acting under political pressure and favouring the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party initially announced a boycott of the rerun, calling it illegitimate.
In a turn of events, however, NPP candidate Nana Akua Afriyie defied the boycott and participated in the vote. Her decision followed the dismissal of a court injunction she filed to stop the rerun.
The EC has denied all allegations of bias, insisting it remains independent and committed to delivering a credible electoral process.
