Abronye’s arrest is an exhibition of “arrogance of power” and selective justice – Jerry Ahmed

Deputy Minority Chief Whip Denounces Government Hypocrisy and Calls for Focus on Ghana's Economic Hardships

Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaibu has critiqued the John Mahama administration, accusing it of hypocrisy and the “arrogance of power.”

Speaking to Starr FM on the sidelines of the demonstration ‘Yensuro Ahunahuna’ demonstration in Sunyani, Jerry Ahmed highlighted a perceived double standard in how political speech is policed.

He pointed out that members of the current government once leveled severe insults and “curses” against former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo without facing similar legal repercussions.

“What about people who were even calling Dr Bawumia a drunk? They called him a drunk…President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, people went to the extent of cursing him to die,” Shaib stated.

“And these are the list of people we are dealing with, and now they have power.”

Invoking the names of Nelson Mandela, Kwame Nkrumah, and J.B. Danquah, Shaib declared that the opposition would not be silenced by the threat of imprisonment.

The Deputy Minority Chief Whip urged the government to move away from “intimidation tactics” and focus on “bread and butter issues”.

He cited a staggering 28% increase in electricity costs and a 20% VAT rate as evidence of the growing economic burden on Ghanaians.

Shaibu also raised alarms regarding the cost of doing business at the nation’s ports, specifically mentioning a “publican AI” system he claims is inflating costs.

He shared a specific instance where a company imported goods from France totaling 90,000 euros, only to be hit with 447,000 euros in port fees upon arrival in Ghana.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Weija challenged government claims of food gluts, noting that schools are struggling to feed children and headmasters have not received promised funds for food purchases.

He also criticized the government’s failure to maintain the national fleet, alleging that 127 ambulances remain demobilized and non-functional.

Shaibu mocked the introduction of “aboboyance” (motorized tricycles) while fundamental infrastructure and emergency services are at a “total stop”.
