The Royal Akua Korang Akwamu Abrade Family of Asamankese in the Eastern Region has called on the government to take immediate action to bring finality to the long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the area.
At a press conference held at the family’s ancestral home, Akwamu Fie in Asamankese-Beposo on Monday, the family expressed frustration that, despite securing judgments from judicial and traditional bodies—including the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs Judicial Committee, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council Judicial Committee, and the High Court in Koforidua—these decisions have yet to be implemented.
According to the family, earlier efforts by the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs under the previous government had provided a platform for dialogue, but such engagements have stalled under the current administration.
A petition sent earlier this year to the new government, copied to relevant institutions, remains unanswered.
“Early this year, the family also sent a petition to the current government and is yet to hear from the government or any of the institutions this petition was copied to. In the course of our engagement with government and government institutions, we have realized that government and government institutions are not paying due attention to our plight since we are peaceful people,” the family stated.
Osabarima Kentinka Pobi Asomaning, who claims to be the legitimate Chief of Asamankese, affirmed that the Royal Akua Korang lineage remains the undisputed custodian of Asamankese lands, with only a one-third arrangement with the Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa.
He asserted that no one outside the family can legitimately ascend the Asamankese Divisional Stool.
He further alleged that a rival claimant, Osabarima Adu Darko II, is not a true member of the lineage and is relying on an allegedly fraudulent gazette.
The family insists that the duly installed chief is Osabarima Kentinka Pobi Asomaning, in accordance with the Chieftaincy Act.
Warning against attempts to alter inheritance procedures, the family cited the historical creation of the Asamankese Division through colonial Executive Instruments in the 1930s and 1940s, specifically for the Akua Korang Abrade Family.
“Asamankese Division of the Akyem-Abuakwa state was created through a colonial Executive Instrument in the 1930s and 1940s for the Royal Akua Korang Abrade Family; hence any machination and arm twisting of the inheritance procedure to the Asamankese Divisional stool will be resisted by the descendants and Members of the Royal Akua Korang Akwamu Abrade Family of Asamankese.”
The family urged the government and state institutions to enforce the decisions of the rightful bodies to safeguard peace and stability in Asamankese.
They further demanded the removal of the rival chief, Osabarima Adu Darko II, from the palace as directed by court before any dialogue can proceed.
“For peace and tranquility to reign in Asamankese, we entreat the government and state institutions to bring finality to these chieftaincy matters based on decisions from rightful institutions responsible for such matters.”
