Ghana Premier League side Asante Kotoko, according to trusted sources, have held encouraging discussions over a move for UK-born Ghanaian coach Chris Baffour-Akoto.
The Kumasi-based club are searching for a permanent head coach, and it is understood that Baffour-Akoto has emerged as the leading candidate for the role after leaving Luxembourg Premier League side Titus Pétange due to work permit restrictions.
However, the Porcupine Warriors are not expected to rush into a final decision on the appointment.
The club appointed Hamza Obeng as interim head coach following two managerial departures during the just-ended season.
Substantive head coach Karim Zito later mutually parted ways with the club following incessant pressure from the Porcupine fan base, who were eager to see their beloved club return to winning ways.
The same pressure affected assistant coach Prince Yaw Owusu, who stepped down a month before the end of the season.
The club’s hierarchy remains confident of attracting a quality coach capable of meeting the expectations of the supporters. Influential figures around the club are reportedly excited by Baffour-Akoto’s potential as Asante Kotoko seek a new direction.
The UEFA Licence A holder announced himself as one of the best young managers in the 2024/25 Division One League after guiding Rospak FC to a second-place finish.
He secured 59 points, oversaw 18 victories, and led the side to score 50 goals during the campaign. He has also managed Crawley U-21 and Fort William.
There is a growing feeling within Asante Kotoko that Baffour-Akoto’s style of play would suit the club’s youthful squad.
The former Black Stars and Ghana U-20 video assistant coach is also highly respected within football circles, a factor that could help him command the dressing room and attract quality players to the club.
Discussions have already taken place between both parties, with Asante Kotoko keen to make an early appointment so the new coach can familiarise himself with the club’s structures and players ahead of the new season.
