The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack on Godka Jilow Prison in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Friday, October 4, 2025.
The attack, attributed to the Al-Shabaab militant group, claimed several lives and left many others injured.
In a statement dated Sunday, October 05, Mr. Youssouf extended the AU’s condolences to the government and people of Somalia, particularly the families of the victims, and wished the injured a swift recovery.
He reaffirmed the AU’s unwavering commitment to supporting Somalia’s fight against terrorism and violent extremism, noting that the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) remains vital in backing the Somalia Security Forces through joint operations aimed at restoring peace and stability.

The AU Chairperson further urged member states, troop and police-contributing countries, and the wider international community to intensify their support to Somalia and AUSSOM in the ongoing efforts to degrade and eliminate Al-Shabaab and other extremist groups.
