The Bagre Dam spillage has been postponed following the stabilisation of water levels at the dam.
According to a statement by the Ghana Water Resources Commission, it received an update from SONABEL, the management of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso, indicating that the planned controlled spillage would not proceed as initially scheduled.
The WRC stated, “SONABEL has postponed the commencement of its controlled water spillage from the Bagré Dam.”
The latest figures indicate that the reservoir has not yet reached the level at which the controlled spillage is expected to begin.
“As of Tuesday August 11, 2026, the reservoir water level of the Bagré Dam is at 233.08 metres, with a filling rate of 75.40%,” the Commission said.
It added that “The reservoir level is currently 1.92 metres below the normal reservoir level of 235.00 metres.”
Despite the postponement, SONABEL is expected to proceed with the release once the reservoir reaches the designated threshold.
The WRC said, “SONABEL intends to commence controlled water spillage from the Bagré Dam, when the reservoir water level reaches 234.50 metres.”
The Commission further assured the public that it was keeping a close watch on the situation and would communicate any new developments.
“The Commission is monitoring the situation and will update stakeholders and the general public on the date and time of the controlled water spillage from the Bagré Dam,” it said.
The latest announcement follows an earlier warning issued by the Water Resources Commission ahead of the anticipated spillage of the Bagre Dam.
Farmers and residents living along the White Volta were advised to stay away from riverbanks and exercise caution in anticipation of increased water levels downstream.
The postponement temporarily eases concerns over an immediate rise in water levels along the White Volta, but authorities are continuing to monitor the dam as its reservoir level changes.
The WRC said further information will be provided when SONABEL determines the date and time for the controlled release.
