The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will officially launch the 60th anniversary celebration of the Ghana Cedi on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre under the theme, “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”

The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. with President John Dramani Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour.

Ghana officially adopted the Cedi as its national currency on July 19, 1965, marking the country’s transition from colonial rule and asserting its economic independence. Since then, the Cedi has undergone various reforms, redesigns, and policy transformations, serving as both a monetary instrument and a symbol of national pride, resilience, and progress.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the Cedi@60 celebration offers a strategic opportunity to reflect on six decades of monetary sovereignty, deepen public understanding of Ghana’s financial journey, and promote pride in the Cedi as a symbol of stability and identity.

“This anniversary allows us to engage the public on the history and future of the Cedi, strengthen financial literacy, and inspire Ghanaians to uphold the integrity of our national currency,” the Bank noted in its statement.

The central bank outlined the goals of the year-long programme, which include commemorating the Cedi’s evolution and its role in national development, educating citizens on proper currency usage and security features, and promoting confidence in Ghana’s monetary system.

The celebrations also seek to engage stakeholders across all regions through inclusive events and public education campaigns, while fostering national pride and financial responsibility.

As part of activities marking the milestone, the Bank of Ghana will hold:

•A National Launch Ceremony at the Accra International Conference Centre.
•Cedi Van Regional Roadshow to promote exhibitions, education, and public outreach.
•A Currency Conference, featuring participants from global central banks, academia, and the private sector.
•Youth-focused competitions in music, art, essay writing, and quizzes to engage students and raise awareness about the Cedi’s history and importance.

Public education campaigns will also focus on clean note handling, currency security awareness, and the history of Ghana’s currency since independence.

EIB Network will transmit the official launch live across its television and radio platforms, allowing Ghanaians across the country to join in the historic commemoration.

The BoG emphasized that the Cedi@60 celebration is not only a commemoration of history but also a reaffirmation of Ghana’s economic sovereignty and the central bank’s commitment to maintaining monetary stability.
