President John Dramani Mahama has assured the Nayiri, Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II that a high-level mediation effort to address the protracted chieftaincy conflict in Bawku will resume shortly.
The president, who embarked on a peace-building mission to the two kingdoms on Tuesday said the initiative aims to foster dialogue and promote lasting peace in Bawku.
During his engagement with the Nayiri, President Mahama reiterated the government’s commitment to working with traditional leaders, stakeholders, and mediators to find a lasting solution to the longstanding dispute.
“In my last briefing with Nana Akufo-Addo before he left office, he briefed me about what they were undertaking. I wish to be able to discuss it with him so we can see how we can continue that effort,” the head of state said to the Nayiri through an interpreter.
He told the overlord he could “count on him” as a “son” to do his part in achieving peace in the area.
President Mahama said he had campaigned on helping resolve the prolonged conflict and upon assuming office, decided to travel to Bawku in his first official trip outside the capital.
The president noted that he had come in person to notify the overlord of a subsequent invite which would help continue peace efforts.
The conflict in Bawku is one of the most protracted misunderstandings in the nation’s history with several episodes of curfews imposed by governments. While they have attempted to resolve the issues, they have not succeeded.
