A total of thirty-seven chiefs and eleven constituency executives of the ruling New Patriotic Party have kicked against the renomination of the District Chief Executive for Birim North Raymond Nana Damptey.
The votes of no confidence by the Chiefs was passed Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at Abirim after a meeting. A leaked audio containing threats on chiefs in the area by supporters of the DCE was played at the said meeting.
Out of the forty-two chiefs present, thirty-seven voted against the DCE while four voted for him with one spoilt ballot.
President of the Association of Chiefs in the area Obrempong Kwasi Amo Tweretwie I cited the DCE’s “lack of respect for the Chiefs by refusing to attend to their calls anytime an invitation is extended to him” as one of the reasons.
They also mentioned the “involvement of the DCE in Chieftaincy disputes and cited Abodom and Ntronang as examples. Most of these disputes turned very violent and bloody. The DCE attacked the Chiefs on his Ananse FM station and during assembly meetings. Refusal of the DCE to recognize the Chiefs in making key decisions affecting the district”.
The chiefs have officially petitioned the office of the President with copies to the Vice President, Chief of Staff, Local Government Minister, and the Eastern Regional Minister on their decision.
Meanwhile, eleven out of seventeen constituency executives have also signed a petition against the reappointment of the DCE.
The petition stated that “we NPP Abirem Constituency Executives: Constituency Chairman, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Deputy Organizer, Youth Organizer, Deputy Youth Organizer, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Communication Officer, Nasara Coordinator, and Deputy Nasara Coordinator) write to kick against a renomination bid by Hon. Remond Nana Damptey as Birim North District Chief Executive (DCE).
“Your Excellency Mr. President, kindly accept our congratulations for your re-election and successful swearing-in for a second term as the President of the Republic and the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Force (GAF) and Vice President, H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. We trust and have no iota of doubt in our minds that you will deliver on your mandate, thus we wish you all the very best. We emphatically maintain that several reasons make it impossible for the former DCE to be reappointed”.
When contacted, the DCE said he will respond appropriately.
